The Hasselblad X1D II 50C is a sleek and incredibly capable mirrorless camera that continues to take medium format out of the studio. It is distinguished by its smart design and excellent image capabilities. This second-generation X System camera has a revamped and extended feature set that is intended to improve performance and make overall operation more intuitive and simplified.
The enormous 43.8 x 32.9mm 50MP CMOS sensor at the heart of the X1D II produces high-resolution photography with a wide 14-stop dynamic range, 16-bit colour depth, and ISO 100-25600 sensitivity range. This sensor, too, employs Hasselblad's Natural Colour Solution, which provides realistic, attractive colour tones for excellent consistency and smooth tonal transitions. A quicker 2.7 fps continuous shooting rate, a speedier startup time, reduced shutter latency and blackout times, and more responsive autofocus performance are also enabled by an improved electronic platform.
The X1D II's image capabilities are balanced by an upgraded body that has a bigger 3.6" 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD and a 0.87x-magnification 3.39m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. These all work together to provide more comfortable and convenient viewing options for shooting in a variety of settings.
The X1D II maintains the characteristic physical design, with a particularly deep right-hand grip and a smooth aluminium alloy body. The XCD lenses' leaf shutter design, which eliminates the requirement for a camera-based shutter system and allows full flash sync across the shutter speed range of up to 1/2000 sec, contributes to the slim overall form factor. Furthermore, built-in Wi-Fi allows for wireless remote control and file sharing via Phocus Mobile 2, and an embedded GPS module allows for location data recording for geotagging.
Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution with 50MP CMOS Sensor
The X1D-50c is built around a huge 50MP CMOS sensor that measures 43.8 x 32.9mm and is capable of capturing an incredibly broad dynamic range of up to 14 stops as well as rich 16-bit colour depth. Tonal transitions and skin tones display incredible depth, richness, and clarity when paired with the Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution for lifelike image quality, even in dark shadow and dazzling highlight zones. A sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 is offered to accommodate working in a variety of lighting settings, and still images are saved in the Hasselblad 3FR raw file format or as JPEGs.
The Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution, which works with the amazing image quality of the 50MP CMOS sensor, is designed to deliver images with the most natural colour without the need to delve into a range of settings. Because of the X1D II's 16-bit colour depth, this device is also capable of producing imagery with very smooth tone shifts evocative of analogue film capture.
The large 3.6" 2.36m-dot (1024 x 768) rear LCD is designed with a touchscreen for intuitive control, menu navigation, and playing. The upgraded screen also has a faster refresh rate of 60 frames per second for more smooth playback, and it allows autofocus point drag and drop placement as well as autofocus point size changes with pinch/spread finger movement.
The improved 3.69m-dot (1280 x 960) OLED electronic viewfinder has a high magnification of 0.87x for bright and crisp eye-level viewing. The higher resolution improves manual focus accuracy, and the menu system can be accessed through the EVF for more intuitive adjustment when working in strong light.
For better read/write rates, the dual SD memory card slots support the UHS-II protocol.
Built-in Wi-Fi allows for wireless file sharing as well as remote camera control. Phocus Mobile 2 also provides a full tethered shooting experience from an iPad Pro or iPad Air (2019).
The USB 3.0 Type-C connector is useful for file transfers, tethered shooting from an iPad, and charging the in-camera battery via a computer, charger, or power bank.
The integrated GPS module can be used to add location information to image files for geotagging applications.
For a more streamlined user interface, the body design has a milled aluminium alloy chassis with a clean surface finish and a minimal number of buttons and dials. Furthermore, because leaf shutters are included inside the lenses, the total body design can be greatly reduced for a more compact and lightweight form factor.
Other Camera Functions
When compared to the first generation X1D, the updated electrical platform achieves better overall performance, including a 46% faster startup time, reduced shutter lag and blackout times, and more responsive autofocus.
Designed for use with the XCD line of lenses, which include an integrated central shutter system with sync speeds of up to 1/2000 sec.
Phocus Mobile 2, which is available for the iPad Pro and iPad Air (2019), allows for the direct import, modification, and rating of raw photographs, as well as the direct import and rating of full-resolution JPEG images. Phocus Mobile 2 also includes full-resolution image export, tethered shooting, and direct camera control.
The desktop version of Phocus supports traditional computer-based tethered shooting.
